DRUNK AND DRIVE

Federal Law No. 21 of 1995 “Concerning traffic” as amended in the law, which governs traffic and regulates vehicles. The law also stipulates the sanctions for traffic crimes and procedures related thereto. It’s strictly prohibited for the driver of any vehicle to drive under the influence of an alcoholic or narcotic substance, even if it’s legal.

According to UAE legal practice, there is zero tolerance to drink while driving. By virtue of the Article No. 10.6 of the Traffic Law driver of any vehicle shall abstain from driving under the effect of the alcoholic or narcotic substance.

In 2024, the regulations were strengthened further. All drivers engaged in accidents or traffic infractions are now required to undergo alcohol testing, with any detectable amount leading to serious consequences.

Being caught operating a vehicle under the influence of substances mandates a 60-day impoundment of the individual’s car. Additionally, they will accumulate 23 black points on their driving record, constituting a significant penalty.

When it comes to penalties and fines for drunk driving in Dubai, offenders should be prepared for harsh repercussions.

Violators may face fines ranging from AED 20,000 to AED 30,000, jail time of up to three months. And, the confiscation of their vehicles for 60 days.

The penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol is punishable by UAE include:

  • Six months of imprisonment
  • A fine of approximately AED 5,000
  • A combination of both fines and imprisonment.

Procedure for Offence Handling
